Phil Green served as the Yellow Island Steward from 1999-2018. Originally hired for an eight-month position, Phil worked the other four months as Bald Eagle Survey Coordinator for the Skagit and Sauk rivers. Since February 2005 he lived full time on Yellow Island. Besides maintaining the native prairies on Yellow, Phil worked with numerous partners in the San Juan Islands: the Sea Doc Society, the Islands Oil Spill Association, the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, the San Juan Preservation Trust, and the San Juan County Land Bank. He also serves on the San Juan County Marine Resources Committee.
In his spare time Phil enjoys wildlife photography and recording natural sounds. He is a SCUBA diver, having turned in over 400 fish and invertebrate surveys to the Reef Environmental Education Foundation. Phil has uploaded over 4,000 bird checklists to eBird, and over 400 audio recordings to the Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds.
Phil has a BS in Biology (1974) from Union College in Schenectady, New York, as well as an MS in Mathematics (1987) from WWU in Bellingham.
